Julia Emslander presents a portfolio of works dating from 2017 to 2020 for TheArtists. Employing a dark grey monochrome palette of charcoal, graphite, black and metallic pigments and chalk-like paint, Emslander’s artworks reference the asphalt of the city she inhabits, distilling her personal experiences into painting. Colour becomes material, its striated and time-exposed surfaces assuming the role of the pictorial. Her process based art presents a sensual, emotional and aesthetic proposition, coming alive in the confrontation between the work and its viewers in an environment and the interplay between them – a phenomenological approach that heightens perceptions and enables multiple points of view.
Emslander gradually builds up an image space consisting of surfaces and lines in a typographical-architectural order and non-perspective depth. She studies and experiments with different pigments, materials and techniques, building surfaces through a process of applying, sanding, damaging, scratching and superimposing thin layers of paint, adopting techniques from art history and often turning them on their heads. This lengthy preparatory process allows improvisation and intuition in the moment of creation, for chance to play a part. “The field for art is infinite, borders are fluid and anything could be art,” she states, likening her artistic processes to performing in the techno-punk band Frauenstrasse or performing tattoos free-hand.
