New Works & Concert

Gabriel Stöckli: New Works & Concert by Marco Guglielmetti, Paul Pedrazzini and Matteo Simonin @KRONE COURONNE, Biel/Bienne

In the attic of KRONE COURONNE artist Gabriel Stöckli showed some of his latest works: Senza titolo [Untitled] (2023) is a series of sound sculptures that the artist conceived during his residency at Cité internationale des arts in Paris earlier this year. They are inspired, like many of Stöckli’s works, by the daily observation of his surroundings and their slow absorption. Domestic life, conviviality, irony, human intelligence – some of the issues that interest him the most – have been circumscribed, synthesized and returned in a new, unusual context. Taking inspiration from two sound sculptures by Gabriel Stöckli, musicians Marco Guglielmetti, Paul Pedrazzini and Matteo Simonin performed live on this evening. They started playing to the soundtrack of the sculpture Dream Operator, overlapping with it and then presented other compositions. There were snacks & beer during and following the concert.

The evening also provided an opportunity to view Gabriel Stöckli‘s Cahier d‘Artiste and obtain a copy if interested. The centrepiece of the artist book, entitled «Cuori», is a captivating conversation between the artist and writer Stella Succi, enriched with visual interventions by Gabriel Stöckli. The publication also includes a selection of illustrations from the renowned Italian weekly magazine La Settimana Enigmistica, which Stöckli has arranged into new collages. The book was designed and published by Jungle Books with the support of Pro Helvetia.

The programme took place between October and December 2023 at various locations in Switzerland. For those interested, they offered the opportunity to obtain a copy of the small edition Cahiers.

Cahier d'Artiste by Gabriel Stöckli: Cuori

Cuori, 250 x 355 mm, 56 pages (published by Jungle Books)

After graduating from the Centro scolastico per le industrie artistiche in Lugano, Gabriel Stöckli earned a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Art and a Master’s degree in Visual Art and Curatorial Studies at La Nuova Accademia delle Belle Arti in Milan. Since 2014, he has also been co-director of the Lugano-based art space ‘Sonnenstube’. Gabriel creates his sculptural works from simple materials and ready-mades and presents them in an experimental style typical of the DIY age. Gabriel’s works explore the loss of a shared societal horizon of meaning. Questions of time and transience inform his choice of forms, actions and objects throughout his work. His preoccupation with an uncertain future drives his search for a sense of community and for tools enabling us to live in the here and now.

The centrepiece of Gabriel Stöckli’s Cahier d’Artiste, entitled “Cuori”, is a captivating conversation between the artist and the author Stella Succi. The book presents their conversation over 56 pages, enriched with visual interventions by Gabriel Stöckli. In addition to the conversation, the publication also includes a selection of illustrations from the renowned Italian weekly magazine La Settimana Enigmistica, which Stöckli has arranged into new collages.
